The Kerala backwaters are a complex network of around 38 rivers, 5 lakes, and 1500 km of canals. These can be best explored by booking a Kerala houseboat which takes you on a ride along the backwaters. Not just that, Kerala boat house tour will open up the traditional village life of Kerala to you, where the backwaters are an important transport system for daily activities such as fishing, and buying and selling staple foods. You can also enjoy the delicious local cuisine with fresh fish from the river.

Houseboats have existed since 3000 BC in South India. They are known as Kettuvalam in Malayalam. Kettu refers to "tied" whereas Valam refers to "boat". Previously, they were used for transporting rice, spices and buying and selling of goods. The houseboats were used to transport around 30 tonnes of goods between Cochin and Kuttanad.

The houseboats are built from jack-wood without the use of any nail. The wood is held together by choir ropes made from coconut kernels. To prevent them from getting rusted from the continuous exposure to water, a coating of boiled cashew nut shells is applied. Bamboo poles are used to row the boats along the backwaters.

Modern-day houseboats in Kerala pack in all the comforts of home right into a floating paradise. The boathouses in Kerala have fully furnished bedrooms and living rooms, well-stocked kitchens, proper toilet facilities and even balconies from where you can carry out fishing activities. You can get the best backwater experience by staying overnight in these houseboats.

One of the most popular backwater hubs of Kerala is Alleppey or Alappuzha. Going on one of the Alleppey houseboat cruises can be an enriching experience in your life. You can enjoy the pristine backwaters, lush paddy fields, and the peaceful village life of Kerala. The sight of migratory birds and the Kuttanadan style cuisine are added attractions. There are over 120 houseboats in Alleppey and you can choose from any one of them.

There are several other backwater destinations in Kerala, apart from Alleppey, where you can enjoy a houseboat ride. Here are our favourites:

There are several activities such as boating and paraskiing to choose from.

Have you ever gone houseboat cruising on the backwaters of Kerala? If you haven't, you don't know what you're missing out on. The huge, intercrossing network of canals, rivers, and lakes can make for an interesting experience for you.

The backwaters of Kerala are one of the best tourist attractions and draw huge crowds every year. It's also a blissful place to relax and unwind from the busy city life. The entire backwater network comprises of about 1500 km of canals, 38 rivers, and 5 big lakes. Traditionally used as transportation alleys, now the Kerala backwaters offer beautiful houseboat experiences for travellers.

The houseboats of today - huge, slow moving, exotic barge used for leisure trips -  are the reworked kettuvalloms of olden times. The original kettuvalloms were used to carry tonnes of rice and spices - a standard kettuvallom can hold up to 30 tonnes - from Kuttanad to the Kochi port. A portion of the kettuvallom was covered with bamboo and coir to serve as a restroom and

kitchen for the crew. Meals would be cooked on board and supplemented with fresh fish from the backwaters. Today, the tradition is still continued and the food from the local cuisine is served by the Kuttanad localites, on board. Now these are a familiar sight on the backwaters and in Alleppey alone, there are as many as 120 houseboats.

While converting kettuvallams into houseboats, care is taken to use only natural products. Bamboo mats, sticks and wood of the aracanut tree are used for roofing, coir mats and wooden planks for the flooring and wood of coconut trees and coir for beds. For lighting though, solar panels are used.

Today, the houseboats have all the creature comforts of a good hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Parts of the curved roof of wood or plaited palm open out to provide shade and allow uninterrupted views. While most boats are poled by local oarsmen, some are powered by a 40 HP engine. Boat-trains - formed by joining two or more houseboats together - are also used by large groups of sight-seers. What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers - while you float!

You'll find hills, beaches, forests everywhere but backwaters are something unique to Kerala. These intricate network of lagoons, lakes, estuaries, and rivers snaking through the rural Kerala countryside form an intriguing landscape. One of the best places to experience the traditional boathouse experience is in Alleppey. It's part of the Vembanad backwaters. Spending a night in a traditional Alleppey boat house can be a quintessential Kerala experience to have.

You can book one of the Alappuzha boat houses that will take you for a ride along the lush green countrysides of Kerala. You will get freshly cooked food onboard and you can enjoy some surreal experiences such as watching the sunset on the river. Alappuzha, also known as "Venice of the East" is the ideal place to watch the rustic natural beauty of Kerala unfold. It can offer you rewarding experiences that you'll cherish for your entire lifetime. If you love nature, then hop on a boathouse in Kerala to experience nature in its finest form.

Come discover the enchanting backwaters and lively villages of Kerala on a houseboat cruise. Nowhere in the world you will get this kind of experience. If you're planning to book any Kerala boathouse tour packages, then you should check out the ones here.
