When Millions of Women Transform an Entire City

Imagine an entire city turning into one massive open-air kitchen. Streets, parks, courtyards, office compounds, school grounds, and even private homes become sacred spaces where millions of women prepare a traditional offering to the Goddess.

Welcome to Attukal Pongala, one of India’s most extraordinary religious festivals and the world’s largest annual gathering of women.

Held at the famous Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala, this unique festival attracts women devotees not only from Kerala and other parts of India but also from countries around the world. The festival is recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest annual gathering of women, with 2.5 million participants recorded in 2009.

Attukal Pongala 2027 Date

Attukal Pongala 2027 will be celebrated on 22 February 2027.

The festival usually falls in late February or early March and forms the most important event of the ten-day Attukal Festival. Devotees are advised to check official temple announcements for exact timings closer to the festival date.

What is Attukal Pongala?

The word “Pongala” means “to boil over.” Women prepare a sweet offering made from rice, jaggery, coconut, and other ingredients in earthen pots over traditional wood-fired stoves. The offering is then dedicated to Goddess Attukal Bhagavathy, affectionately known as “Attukal Amma.”

What makes this event remarkable is its scale. The ritual extends far beyond the temple premises, covering large parts of Thiruvananthapuram city. Roads stretching for several kilometres become lined with clay stoves and earthen pots, creating an unforgettable spiritual atmosphere.ponkala at attukal temple

The Day Women Take Over Thiruvananthapuram

For one day every year, Thiruvananthapuram belongs to women.

From the early hours of the morning, women occupy every available space around the city. Streets, footpaths, parking areas, playgrounds, residential compounds, and commercial premises become temporary Pongala venues.

Locals proudly participate in this unique tradition by opening their homes, offices, and business premises to visiting devotees. Residents provide:

  • Space for setting up Pongala hearths
  • Drinking water
  • Restroom facilities
  • Food and refreshments
  • Shade and resting areas
  • Assistance to elderly devotees

This remarkable community participation is one of the reasons why Attukal Pongala is admired worldwide. The entire city comes together to support millions of women in their act of devotion.

Women travel from:

  • Different states of India
