How to go to Wayanad in Kerala?

Wayanad is located 03 hours drive from Calicut Airport and 3.5 hours from Kannur Airport. From Mysore wayanad is accessible by road through Mananthavady or through Bandipur.

Wayanad is mountain district in Kerala in the western ghat bordered with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states. It is otherwise called land of paddy fields. It has forests with wildlife sanctuaries. The main attractions of Wayanad are:

1) WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES

Muthanga wildlife sanctuary and tholpetty wildlife sanctuaries are the continuation of the Nagarhole and bandipur forests of Karnataka and Mudumalai forest of Tamilnadu. Morning drive through the Bandipur forest from Mysore to Waynad is the beautiful dive for the wildlife and nature lovers where you may spot wild animals at a close quarters. There is a good chance to see wild Elephants, deer, bison, monkeys different species of butterfly’s and the flora and fauna are very distinct.

2-1) CHEMBRA PEAK

At 2100 meters, the highest in Wayanad.
With a heart shaped lake en route, the trek up the Chembra Peak is one of the most satisfying trekking trails in Wayanad.

A paradise for birdwatchers.
Trekking to this avian haunt located at an altitude of 1740 meters takes one through the scenic Brahmagiri Hills, offering some of the most spectacular views one can have in Wayanad.

3) TOURIST SPOTS

3-1) EDAKKAL CAVES

Trekking to the edakkal caves depicts the stone age pictorial writings on the caves .25kms away from Kalpetta lays two caves which showcases nature’s skill and philosophy on architecture. These caves are located 1,200 m above the sea level on Ambukutty Mala. The name ‘Edakkal’ literally means ‘a stone in between’. Here you can see a cave formed by a heavy boulder straddling a fissure in the rock.

3-2) KURUVA ISLAND

Kuruva Dweep or Kuruva Island is a protected river delta, comprising a cluster of islands over the middle of Kabini River in Wayanad. Spread over 950 acres of land, Kuruva Island is densely populated with rich flora and fauna. The geographical peculiarity of this island makes this place evergreen with a serene ambience.

Dwelling deep into this island, you can sight many attractive things like bridges made up of bamboo trees and other rare species of trees. The uninhabited island is home to rare species of birds, orchids, herbal plants etc. Coming so much closer to the nature, you might be feeling Kuruva Island as a nature’s gift to Wayanad.
